Tomato rice/Thakali rice

Mausi(my kids Nanny) has taken 4 days off, so the kitchen is all mine and its now my responsibility to make something nice for my family.I enjoyed the first day of her absence and prepared whatever my family loves to have ,but by the end of the day I was completely exhausted and hence decided to keep the second day's menu to be less elaborate so that I can spend time with kids and take care off other stuffs as well and hence decided to prepare the simplest and yet yummy "Tomato rice" for lunch as it does not require too much of preparation.
Yes its a very good option when you lack time and want to prepare something very simple yet tasty. One can have it with any kind of raita. Its a very good option for kids tiffin as well.

So lets see how to make tangy tomato rice.
 
 

Ingredients                                                Quantity                                                      
Rice                                                                :1 cup
Ripe juicy tomatoes                                   :5(medium size)
Onion chopped                                           : 1 large
Green chillies                                              : 2 chopped
Chilli Powder                                               : 1/2 tsp
Turmeric powder                                       : 1/4 tsp
As/Hing
Coriander leaves                                        : 2 tbsp finely chopped
Salt as needed

For the seasoning
Oil                                                                   : 3 tbsp
Mustard seeds                                             : 1/2 tsp
Tur daal                                                        : 1 Sp
Black Gram/Uzhunnu parippu               : 1 Sp
Chana Daal                                                   : 1 Sp
Curry leaves                                                : few
Red  chilli                                                     : 2

Preparation Method    :                                                                                                 
  • Pressure cook the rice for 2 whistles and keep it aside, Be careful that rice is not overcooked.
  • In a wok/Kadai, splutter mustard seeds,add  red chill, black gram/Udad dal,Tur dal and chana dal.
  • Saute till the urad/black gram ,tur dal and chana dal turns slightly brown in colour

  • Now add chopped green chilli,Curry leaves,chopped onion and a pinch of salt.
  • Saute till the onion turns slight brown. No need to deep fry it.
  • Now add turmeric, red chilli powder, hing and mix well.
  • Add the chopped tomatoes and keep stirring till the tomatoes become mushy, cook for another 5 mins.
  • Now add the already cooked rice and mix well such that the rice gets completely mixed with the above gravy and cook for another 10 mins by stirring occasionally.
Garnish with the coriander leaves.
